Dictates of Conscience
To all the beautiful people reading this, i hope you all had a wonderful day . I wish you all a very happy republic day. 26 January marks the prestigious date on which constitution of India came into effect. Many philanthropists and social activists like Mahatma Gandhi , Dr. B.R Ambedkar , Annie Besant etc. are the ones who were determined for sustainable and rapid growth of the Indian society and the well being of the civilians of the respective country, but do you really think now this is followed and practiced by the leaders or the entrepreneurs of today? Answer to this reflects the sad reality of Indian business society. I think entrepreneurs and start-up generators of now are more towards the profit maximization of their enterprises and fails to fulfill their obligations towards environment. Ethically these enterprises are going wrong by the disguise deeds they were doing and over shadowing these deeds by showing how good they work as a business enterprise.
On July 23, 2019, National Green Tribunal slaps penalty of Rs 1 crore on Grasim Industries. Grasim Industries Limited is an Indian manufacturing company based in Mumbai, Maharastra. Grasim Industries was ranked 154th in a list of the world's best regarded firms compiled by Forbes. News came from New Delhi as Nation Green Tribunal has imposed an interim penalty of Rs. 1 crore on Grasim industries for storing huge stock of the mercury, obtained as by-product, in its premises in Sonbhadra district of Uttar Pradesh. A bench headed by NGT chairperson justice Adarsh Kumar Goel directed the company to shift the hazardous waste in accordance with the Hazardous Waste Management Rules, 2016. The applicant (Grasim) have to pay the interim penalty with the CPCB (Central Pollution Control Board) to be spend for the restoration of the environment. A report states that there was a huge stock of mercury bearing brine sludge which was obtained as by-product during the course of manufacturing prior to 2012, has been stored in premises of the company.
So here comes the question "do you think Grasim industry is ethical by not disposing this hazardous material called mercury". The answer to this is big NO. Mercury a silver shiny metal is one of the most harmful element that exist on earth. A regular exposure to mercury vapours can damage your immune, digestive system, lungs and kidney to great extent. Poisonous mercury are corrosive to skin, eyes and gastrointestinal tact. So do you think the employees, the workforce are safe and healthy under the functioning of Grasim enterprise?. Your answer would be same as mine. As a part of such a big parent company (Aditya Birla Group), the company fails their obligation to the employees and the environment under which they are functioning.
An Industry with FY revenue of more than 56,000 crores doesn't have an enough money for the waste management and sustainable development of an Organization. This clearly shows the disguised wrong deeds of one of the biggest business group. Instead of maintaining a bulk of mercury for years, they could have easily dispose it on regular basis to maintain authenticity and transparency in their work. These things becomes the limelight and destroy company's reputation and goodwill. Code of Ethics and law should be practiced and followed to fulfill obligations as whole. contributing to some type of CSR's or any of the social projects aren't everything, having an insight or the vision to the respective business as well as finding the ways for creating an ideal world for the civilians of the country is the true leadership practiced by any Entrepreneurs or the businessmen/businesswomen. A company and the leader who have specified and well directed code of ethics and conduct are the ones who are the most successful enterprises and leaders in this universe.
Thank You
